Observing Notes

from the Tuckahoe Irregulars

Tuckahoe Sun, 21 Oct 2001...Don R Surles
We had a bunch-o-gazers friday and saturday nites at t-hoe.  a group of about 12-15 DAS/DSG members were there friday night to welcome the long awaited hi-cloud cover.  we did ok until about 11:00 and most folks packedit in around midnight when the sky clouded up completely.  Of course the skies were very clear when i awoke at 7:00 am.

Saturday night was by far the best night - it got warmer and wetter as the hours passed.  we saw some meteors  - Tim Milligan and I saw about 20 in just a few minutes around 3:30 - 4:00 am.  the Orion nebula is superb in the southeast.  even though water was dripping off the 25's primary I could  see the fifth and sixth stars and someone described the nebula as looking like a bomb had exploded - a sign of the times?

I don't remember or know all the names of the gazers - but here are the one's I do:  Paul Gray, Tim Milligan, Steve Long, Terry Young, Josh Zimmerman, Pat from Clayton(a newbie), a camper, a person from the DC area with a 134" focal length dob, an astronomy student from Baltimore(Johns Hopkins), ???.

We stayed until Orion was high enuf for impressive viewing.  Most folks left around 3:00.  Tim and I left at 4:00.

good viewing - but awfully wet.
